How to Extend Your Stay in Korea: Visa Extension Guide for Exchange Students

June 10, 2026

If you are an exchange student or long-term visitor in Korea and want to extend your stay beyond your original visa's duration, you need to apply for a visa extension (체류기간 연장) through the Korean Immigration Service before your current visa expires. For D-2 (student) visa holders, this process is standard and manageable — but timing is critical. You must apply at least 1 month before your visa expires (ideally 2 months), and late applications result in fines and potential complications. This guide explains exactly how to extend your stay in Korea step by step.

Types of Visas That Can Be Extended in Korea

D-2 Student Visa

The D-2 visa is issued to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Korean universities. It is typically valid for 1–2 years at a time and can be extended as long as you remain enrolled. D-2 extensions are the most common type for exchange students who extend their semester abroad or transfer to a full degree program. The D-2 visa has six subtypes: D-2-1 (junior college), D-2-2 (bachelor's), D-2-3 (master's), D-2-4 (doctoral), D-2-5 (technical training), and D-2-6 (exchange).

D-4 Language Training Visa

The D-4 visa is for students enrolled in Korean language programs at universities or accredited language institutes. D-4 visas are typically issued for 6 months to 1 year and can be extended up to a maximum of 2 years total for language study.

C-3 Tourist Visa Extension

C-3 tourist visas (90-day entry) generally cannot be extended in Korea — you typically must exit and re-enter. However, in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, flight cancellation, force majeure), short extensions of 1–2 weeks may be granted at the discretion of the immigration officer. Do not rely on this option for planned long stays.

Step-by-Step: How to Extend a D-2 Student Visa in Korea

Step 1: Check Your Current Visa Expiry Date

Your visa expiry date is printed on your ARC card (the expiration date on the card). You must apply for extension before this date — not the entry stamp date in your passport. Start the process at least 4–6 weeks before your ARC expiry to allow for processing time and appointment availability at the immigration office.

Step 2: Get Your University's Support Documents

Your university's international student office (국제처) is your most important resource for the visa extension process. They typically issue:

  • Certificate of enrolment (재학증명서) — available from your university student portal, usually for free
  • Academic standing proof — you must maintain a certain GPA (often 2.0/4.5 or higher) to remain eligible for a student visa
  • Scholarship or financial support documents (if applicable)

Step 3: Prepare Required Documents

For a standard D-2 visa extension, you need:

  • Valid passport
  • Current ARC card
  • Completed application form (Form 34) — downloadable from HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr)
  • Certificate of enrolment (재학증명서) from your university
  • Proof of tuition payment (등록금 납부 영수증) for the current and/or upcoming semester
  • Proof of financial ability — bank statement showing at least 3,000,000–5,000,000 KRW or equivalent (requirements vary by immigration officer)
  • 1 passport photo (same specifications as for the original ARC)
  • Application fee: 60,000 KRW for 1-year extension, 30,000 KRW for 6-month extension

Step 4: Apply Online via HiKorea or Visit in Person

Online application: Visit www.hikorea.go.kr, create or log in to your account, select "Extension of Sojourn Period," upload all required documents, and pay the fee online. The new ARC card with the extended date is mailed to you within 2–3 weeks. This is the most convenient option and avoids immigration office queues.

In-person application: Visit your nearest immigration office (see Seoul Immigration Office address above in the ARC guide). Take a number, submit documents, pay the fee (30,000 or 60,000 KRW), and collect your new ARC card within 1–3 weeks.

Step 5: Maintain Status While Waiting

If you have applied for an extension before your current visa expires, your status is automatically maintained while the application is processed — even if your ARC expiry date passes while you wait. You will receive a receipt confirming your application, which serves as evidence of your legal status. Do not leave Korea while your extension is being processed unless absolutely necessary, as re-entry may complicate your application.

Changing Visa Status: From Exchange to Full Degree Student

If you entered on a D-2-6 (exchange) visa and are transitioning to a full degree program (D-2-1 through D-2-4), you need to apply for a change of status (체류자격 변경) rather than a simple extension. This requires additional documentation including your official university admission letter for the new degree program. The fee for a status change is 130,000 KRW.

Penalties for Overstaying Your Visa

Overstaying your Korean visa is a serious offence with real consequences:

  • Fine: 100,000–3,000,000 KRW depending on duration of overstay
  • Deportation: Overstays exceeding 1–3 months may result in deportation and a re-entry ban of 1–10 years
  • Blacklisting: Severe overstays can result in being blacklisted from future Korean visa applications

Never overstay. If you realise you cannot complete the extension process before your visa expires, visit the immigration office immediately to explain your situation — they can sometimes grant a brief grace period.

University International Office Support

All major Korean universities have international student offices that are experienced in helping foreign students with visa extensions. Before doing anything, visit your university's international office (국제처 / 국제교류팀). They often have English-speaking staff and may even assist you with filling out the application form. Many universities also have visa extension clinics at the start of each semester specifically for exchange students.
